Soul's Remnant Best Builds After the Aug 21 Patch

Soul's Remnant best builds after the Aug 21 magic patch: Whirlwind grind, dungeon paladin, beginner ranged, faith support, Soul Bomb mage. Checked Sept 3, 2026.

8/14/2026 Last updated: 9/4/2026

The Aug 21 magic rework changed which Soul’s Remnant builds are worth copying. This page is the current five-pack: a Whirlwind plus Dark Fire grind, a dungeon paladin, a beginner ranged start, a faith support, and a Soul Bomb mage for bosses. The Aug 31 Ice and Ghost rework does not swap these five kits. Numbers below mix official wiki skill data with the Aug 21 / Aug 22 Steam patch notes. Attack-speed breakpoints for Whirlwind are player reports from the Bahamut guide, not a published table.

Last checked: September 3, 2026. Early Access balance is still moving.

What the Aug 21 Patch Changed

The magic tree was rebuilt. Gust cooldown dropped from 4.5s to 3s with 25% less damage. Star Fall became a toggle. Gravity Well now has a 5 second cooldown, a larger range, a shorter duration, and an explosion when it ends. Arcane Surge shots travel twice as fast and last 10s, but vanish after 14 hits. Soul Bomb gained 30% bonus damage to bosses.

Toggle combat skills — Dark Fire, Divine Thorn, and Star Fall — now snuff out after you stop acting. Pure ranged skills were buffed about 30%, and Soul Shot plus Holy Arrow sit closer to 40%. Shadow Twin no longer double-casts Blink. Aug 22 then let you recast Star Fall to reposition it for a small MP cost.

What the Aug 28 Patch Changed

The Shiny System is the big one for gearing: Gevil can make an item shiny for a soul, which adds a cosmetic effect and one upgrade slot. The look is toggleable, the slot is not. If you have a keeper piece for endgame, budget a soul for it.

Magic got a third pass the same day. Blink now has 0.25 seconds of invulnerability, Star Fall drifts toward monsters by itself, Arcane Surge locks vertically as well as horizontally, and a large Gravity Well can pull monsters from other platforms. Shield Bash range scales with movement speed now, Shadow Step is capped at base + 4s, and Mighty Monsters scale with active killers only (cap 8). Everything below still holds, but re-check the spin and boss math before committing gear.

What the Aug 31 Patch Changed

Ice Shatter now scales off the damage you already put on that monster, not max HP. Ghost pulls in gradually instead of sending the whole map skating. Seirei is +10% damage. Party grinding EXP is no longer slower than solo — group up for the Sept 4–6 +25% combat EXP weekend.

What the Sept 4 Patch Changed

Party EXP now follows who actually fought: your damage is your share, healers and supports get a cut, AFK earns nothing, and you cannot level only off a high-level partner’s kills. Onslaught scales more with melee. Blink and Dash are more reliable in tight spaces. Two new Echoes exist (Item Pickup Speed and Combat Footwork); exact drop locations are not yet confirmed in the notes. The five kits below still hold — Sept 4 did not replace them.

The Five Builds in Detail

Grind: Whirlwind + Dark Fire

This is the map-clear loop players copy now, not the old crit-archer poster. Official wiki: Whirlwind needs Melee 28 and Magic 12, costs 3 skill points plus 1 per level, lasts 3.05s, and sits on a 7.2s cooldown. It scales melee and magic at 80% + 39%/Lv, pulls enemies into you, and grants +18 Speed, +5 Jump, and a small INT-scaled shield.

Dark Fire is a faith-line toggle. Official wiki sheet: Faith Lv 35 to learn, 5.0s cooldown, burns 5% max HP and 7% max Shield per second (cannot kill you), and grants +3% damage per enemy in the circle up to +15%. Aug 21 made all toggle combat skills snuff after inactivity, so keep moving or recast. Aug 20 also cut its initial range by 15%. The Bahamut guide (player report, Aug 19) wants melee + magic attack speed above 100% and skill-duration echoes above 10% so Whirlwind does not stutter. Full breakpoints live on the Whirlwind & Dark Fire page.

Auto-attack: Magic Slash if you scale magic, Holy Arrow if you scale ranged — both give a damage-amp passive (player report). Cross Strike is the boss button on this kit.

Dungeon: Paladin

Paladin is still the safest dungeon body. Put most points into STR and SPR, keep the 3:1 CON habit from the builds page, then add extra CON after 20 if you are dying. Slash, Heavy Strike, Revitalize, and Burst Shield cover hit, heal, and a panic shield.

Echoes: defense, HP regen, melee damage. This is the build you take into Cave Trial and pass dungeons when you do not yet have Whirlwind’s attack-speed gear.

Beginner: Ranged start

Do not start on Whirlwind. You cannot unlock it until Melee 28 and Magic 12. Aug 21 buffed pure ranged skills about 30% and Holy Arrow / Soul Shot about 40%, so a DEX start with some LUK and CON is the honest first character. Ninja Throw still kites. Respec is free before level 10 and once per real-life hour after that, paid in Soul Crystals that rise with level (official wiki).

When Melee 28 / Magic 12 come online, respec toward the grind loop instead of forcing a hybrid from level 1.

Support: Faith stack

Stack SPR. Keep enough CON that Dark Fire feels comfortable (player report from a faith-hybrid video: about 50 CON, not a wiki number). Revitalize is the heal-and-nuke. Armor Link and Divine Blessing help parties. Dark Fire ticks while you stand in the pack.

After Aug 21, Dark Fire will turn itself off if you idle. That is the patch, not a bug.

Boss: Soul Bomb mage

INT plus the usual CON slice. Soul Bomb now deals 30% bonus damage to bosses. Star Fall is a toggle after Aug 21; Aug 22 lets you recast it to move the zone for a small MP cost. Gust is faster (3s cooldown) but 25% weaker. Blink at magic 10 is still the movement skill players treat as mandatory (player report). Use this for named bosses and Abyss floors, not as your all-day grind.

Gear and Attack Speed

Whirlwind is a melee-category skill that also scales magic. Official wiki: cooldown only listens to melee attack speed and global attack speed, even when a skill scales from other damage types. Stack global attack speed, melee attack speed, then magic attack speed for Dark Fire uptime. Duration echoes stop the 3.05s spin from clipping.

Rings and orbs are the usual duration / speed homes (player report). Element on the weapon: Water if you are starving MP, Fire / Lightning / Ghost / Ice for pack clear, Normal for raw extra damage, Metal if you are dying (player report). Element matchups are still not active, so pick the extra effect, not a counter chart.

Which stat feeds which damage type?

StatWhat it actually does
STRMelee damage — the stat behind the melee line.
DEXRange damage — the stat behind the ranged line.
INTMagic damage — the stat behind the magic line.
SPRFaith damage and your MP pool; it slightly raises magic damage too.
CONHP, defense and HP regeneration, with a small bonus to melee and faith damage.
LUKCritical hit chance with a small range bonus.

Player-strategy guideline: about 25–30% of your points into CON and the rest into your main damage stat, roughly a 3:1 split. Survivability still beats damage in the level 20+ zones (Spooky Forest, Sulfur Plains). Respecs are free under level 10 and then once per real-life hour for a Soul Crystal fee that rises with level.
