Soul's Remnant Leveling Guide: Fast XP & Grind Spots
Level up fast in Soul's Remnant with the best grind spots, party XP, monster research, quests, and dungeons - plus how aggro and the EXP ratio actually work.
The fastest way to level in Soul’s Remnant is grinding monsters with a party, with your EXP boosted by monster research, daily-quest 2x EXP coupons, and Darkness Crystal blessings. Quests, dungeons, party quests, and minigames also pay out Player EXP, and choosing the right monster for your level matters more than raw hours. This guide explains aggro, party EXP rules, the Player Ratio, and proven grind spots per level. All details were checked on August 14, 2026.
How Does EXP Work in Soul’s Remnant?
Player EXP comes from more places than monster kills, and the party system changes the math in your favor. Understanding both saves hours across a long grind.
What gives you Player EXP?
Killing monsters is probably the most common method of gaining Player EXP in Soul’s Remnant, but Dungeons, Minigames, Quests, and Party Quests are all great sources of Player EXP and items too (official wiki). You will be killing monsters while doing most of those activities anyway, so grinding skill carries over everywhere.
Why is partying the best leveling move?
Soul’s Remnant strongly encourages party play, and the math backs it up. EXP from monster kills is shared between party members, with the distribution determined by damage dealt to the slain monsters. Player EXP is not just shared, it is also increased: kills in a party grant bonus Party EXP on top of your normal Player EXP (official wiki). Launch-week players call parties a double benefit and the single best leveling decision (player report). One caveat: if the level disparity between you and a party member is more than 10, the free Player EXP from other players’ kills begins to lessen, and once the gap gets high enough, you gain zero Player EXP from their kills, including bonus party EXP (official wiki). Party with players near your own level.
What triggers the boosted spawn rate?
Soul’s Remnant has a mechanic that boosts the spawn rate of a map based on how quickly the monsters in it are being slain. It is achievable even without forming a party, but a party kills faster and keeps the boost rolling (official wiki).
How Aggro and the Player Ratio Pick Your Grind Spot
Two numbers decide whether a spot works for you: your level versus the monsters’ aggro threshold, and the Player Ratio of what you are killing.
Why do some monsters attack me on sight?
When you near a monster, an exclamation point may appear above its head shortly before it chases you. What monsters automatically gain aggro on you is determined by your Player Level: the more difficult the enemy, the higher your level has to be to avoid automatically gaining its aggro (official wiki). Monsters that used to attack you first chance they got may ignore you as you level, though contact damage still applies. Aggro can also be gained by simply attacking a monster or using the Taunt skill, and aggro always goes to the last player that hit the enemy (official wiki).
What is the Player Ratio?
The official wiki’s Grinding Table lists every monster with its level, hitpoints, Player EXP, and a Player Ratio, which is the amount of Player EXP given divided by hitpoints. It is useful for determining grind locations, but the wiki notes it is not perfect (official wiki). Higher-level monsters also have better odds of dropping more and better Echoes, so your loot improves as you move up (official wiki).
Best Grind Spots by Level
The full table lives on the official wiki’s Grinding page. Below are ten representative monsters in rough level order with their official level, hitpoints, and the maps they inhabit (official wiki). EXP columns are still being filled in for many monsters, so compare Player Ratio values where the wiki has them.
Which monsters should I grind at each level?
- Slime, level 1, 20 HP, 6 EXP: Outskirts maps, Secret Garden, Sheep Beach.
- Jel, level 5, 83 HP, 20 EXP: most Outskirts maps and Caves 1-3.
- Hopper, level 9, 307 HP: Outskirts South, Southeast, and Southwest.
- Cloudsheep, level 12, 622 HP: Beach Hunting Grounds, Plains 1, Plains 2, Sheep Beach.
- Black Cloudsheep, level 16, 1,056 HP: Plains 3 and Plains 4.
- Troppo, level 22, 2,618 HP: Seashell Cove and Beach Cave.
- Citruslime, level 25, 3,425 HP: Windy Savannah, Savannah 2, Savannah 3.
- Stinky Sheep, level 30, 6,070 HP: Sulfuric Planes 1 and 2.
- Ferni, level 40, 21,223 HP: Forest 1 and Forest 3.
- Soultree, level 42, 25,543 HP: Forest 2 and Forest 3.
How do Darkness Crystals, Mighty Monsters, and Shinies affect the grind?
Darkness Crystals regularly spawn into maps where monsters are being hunted, acting as Soul’s Remnant’s AFK disruption mechanic. Interacting with one prompts two arrow-key inputs; succeeding gives every player on the map a random 10-minute buff: +7% global damage, +10% EXP, +10% skill EXP, +10% item drops, or +10% soul crystal find. If the darkness is not cleared within 50 monster kills, all EXP and item drops on that map are blocked until it is cleared (official wiki). On the luckier side, Mighty Monsters are much larger, stronger versions of map monsters with increased EXP and better drop chances, and they count as boss monsters. Shiny Monsters are several times rarer than Mighty spawns, drop their loot at a greatly increased rate, and in some cases grant 87 times as much Player EXP (official wiki).
Stacking EXP Multipliers
Multipliers multiply each other, so line them up before a long session: research, coupons, blessings, and the party bonus all stack on the same kills.
How does monster research boost your grind?
Press B to open the Research window. Monsters and resources occasionally drop Research Essence, and collecting 1, 5, 10, and 20 essences for a monster unlocks compounding benefits. Research level 3, at 10 essences, applies a +5% bonus to Player EXP from killing that monster and reveals its drop table with rates. Research level 4, at 20 essences, adds a +10% drop chance while hunting it (official wiki). Research everything you plan to grind, because the bonus is per monster type.
How do 2x EXP coupons work?
The only source of 2x EXP coupons is the daily quest (official wiki). Each coupon doubles your EXP for 15 minutes (player report). Do not change channels while the buff is active: players report that changing channels wipes the buff, and at launch this was a known bug with a hotfix in progress (player report). Whether the fix has shipped is not yet confirmed, so stay on one channel for the full 15 minutes.
Are Echoes part of the grind?
Yes. More and better Echoes are more likely to drop from higher-level monsters, and Shiny monsters can spawn inside Dungeons, making Dungeon Passes that roll EXP-boosting Echoes even more rewarding (official wiki). A Shiny during a doubled run is one of the biggest EXP hits in the game.
Why Leveling Feels Slow at Launch
If leveling feels slower than clips from the playtests, that is by design, not bad luck.
Is leveling slower than the playtests?
Yes. Players who tested both builds report that leveling was slowed down for the Steam launch, at roughly a quarter of the old playtest rate (player report). Launch-day players in crowded starter zones also saw roughly 0.1% of a level per kill before spreading out (player report). The counter-play is the same as always: party up, research your monsters, stack buffs, and move to spots matched to your level instead of fighting over starter-zone spawns.
